Eid Al Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is the second of the two Eids celebrated by Muslims around the world each year. It also signals the end the pilgrimage of Hajj in Makkah which is one of five pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory religious duty by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey to the holy land of Makkah and Medina in Saudi Arabia.
Muslims sacrifice meat which is then divided into three portion and distributed as follows:
One-Third for the family themselves;
One-Third is distributed amongst relatives, friends and neighbours;
One-Third is provided to the less fortunate.
Eid Al Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic Calendar month of Dhul-Hijjah and generally lasts for three to four days. The Islamic Calendar is a lunar calendar based on the sighting of the moon.
